Read If: you like complicated relationships, you don't mind feeling uncomfortable.

I bought this book on a recommendation and was surprised. There are moments of real emotion and connection, but mostly I was uncomfortable while reading it; and not because of the situation, which, yes, is meant to be uncomfortable.

It was more about the character and a lack of redeeming qualities. Watching the same person make poor choices over and over and continue not to learn gets annoying. Not all characters need to have redeeming qualities or learn lessons, but in this case, there wasn't much else in the way of substance, so I'm not sure what I was supposed to get out of the book other than walking away from it uncomfortable.

Pros: Definitely approaches differences and struggles with race, especially when it comes to the main character's relationship with the child in the story. There ARE relatable aspects that many readers will connect with, especially given the main character's age.

Cons: Parts that are supposed to feel substantial don't...ex., painting the wife of the guy you're sleeping with and touching her teeth?? The relatable aspects are overshadowed by the "why the hell would you" moments.
