The Vanishing Half | Brit Bennett

Updated: Dec 27, 2021

Read If: you love a good mystery and twins! you're interested in how race and perceptions of race can shape relationships.

For some reason, the description of this book and the actual story itself are two very different things - and not in a bad way. I just found myself expecting a different story, or perhaps tone, and ended up with something else.

What threw me off was that one twin was very three-dimensional, the other less so, which in the end created an odd feeling of distance when it came to the emotional aspect of this book. As a reader I felt very rooted in one sister's perspective and very much less so in the other's.

There was also an odd lack of tension that came along with having a "missing" sister, and even the discovery of that sister. The ending and explanation of how the family remains in touch felt rushed and loose. But overall, an unexpected story that was genuinely interesting to read - different from anything else I came across on the market, it just didn't feel like it fully pulled together for me.
